Android Emulator

The Android emulator is available in conjunction with the SDK to create native Java applications for Android and it includes the browser. We can download it free from the developer.android.com. We can download the base SDK and later each Android OS separately, like 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. It is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Once downloaded, we should create a folder in our hard drive and unzip the contents of the package.

In the folder where we extracted the package, there is an android terminal command in Mac/Linux and a SDK Setup.exe application for windows that opens the Android SDK and AVD Manager where you can download and configure Android platforms after installing the base SDK.

Nokia Emulators

Nokia always had the better emulators since the beginning of mobile web development. Instead of one emulator per device, we can find one emulator for each version of each platform. We can download emulators for Series 40 (mid and low-end devices) and for S60 (Symbian smartphones) at www.forum.nokia.com. In some particular situations, we can also find specific model emulators with specific features, like Nokia N97.

iPhone Simulator

Only available for MacOS X, the iPhone Simulator is offering a free simulation environment including Mobile Safari. It is not an emulator, so we do not have really a hardware emulation experience, or a performance indicator. However, it is perfectly suitable for see how our website is rendering and our code working. It’s not the perfect tool to measure performance of our website.

The iPhone Simulator is included with the iPhone SDK for native development, available free at developer.apple.com/iphone. Do it with time, because it is a more than 2 Gigabyte download.

Palm Emulator

Palm had emulator support for more than 10 years and always had great support on these tools. We have already talked about the history of Palm and Palm OS and we are going to cover only the new Web OS, the operating system available since Palm Pre. We can download the Palm Mojo SDK that includes the Palm Emulator, from developer.palm.com. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux and it needs to have installed before the Sun VirtualBox, a free virtualization software (available at www.virtualbox.org).

BlackBerry simulators

Research in Motion (RIM), vendor of the popular BlackBerry’s did a great job with emulators with one only problem: it is very difficult to decide which emulator download and use. There are dozens of different installers available. All the tools are available at blackberry.com/developers and include the proxy server, plugins for Eclipse and Visual Studio for web developers and the simulators. All tools are only compatible with Windows operating system.

The first requirement is to download the BlackBerry Email and MDS Services Simulator Package. This proxy allows any simulator to access the network and simulates e-mail and enterprise server. Before opening any browser, we need to start this service in our computer.

Windows Mobile Emulators

To install Windows Mobile emulators, we can use Visual Studio 2008 or 2010 or download them without the IDE in stand-alone mode. The emulator isn’t available from the free Express versions of Visual Studio. The emulators are only available for Windows-based computers.

We need to download:

1. Microsoft Device Emulator
2. Windows Mobile emulator images or images from manufacturers
3. Virtual PC 2007 for Internet connectivity
4. ActiveSync (only for Windows XP or 2003 Server) or Windows Mobile Device Center (only for Windows 7, Vista or 2008 Server)

Installation and settings

Tweetdeck needs to be installed with Adobe Air package, represents an independent program on our browsers and is obbligatory to download a file to execute it.

On the other hand Hootsuite is a web app, so we can execute from a tab on our Internet browsers, sign up on the official page and log-in everytime you want to use it, using our account on Google or Yahoo for example.

Fix extension for Hootsuite on Chrome, allows to add functions that we cannot find on the original version, like the hashtags management, set the columns width, font size, avatar´s appearance, account to response, filters…consum less resorces.

There´s an extension also for Chrome, this time for Tweetdeck that allows to use the app as a tab on your browser.

Social networks supported

More or less support the same: Twitter, Facebook (personal profiles and professional pages),Linkedin, FourSquare y MySpace. Hootsuite offers Ping.fm, WordPress and Mixi. Tweetdeck includes Buzz.

Differences in this case are more because of the Hootsuite´s version used, free version allows only to manage up to 5 accounts while Tweetdeck is free and with no limits.

With Hootsuite you need to specify on every message to which account or several accounts you want to send the post. That obbligates you to make more clicks than the necessary ones and reduces productivity, too slow.

But Hootsuite has a big advantage in front of Tweetdeck, before sending a message to Facebook with a link, generates a miniature available on the linked web to ensure that the appearance will be the same as the post on our wall.

Tweetdeck only shows the text as you can read on Twitter, with link but without preview of the image as a miniature.
Probably as it´s a desktop app cannot generate the code neither access to the linked website to capture the miniature.

Effectively Hootsuite is more focused on Facebook and Tweetdeck on Twitter posts.

Schedule a post

Hootsuite asks you for the hour and minutes separately in two lists and then add if it´s AM or PM, on Tweetdeck is enough writting the hour in 24h format.
Besides, on Hootsuite must be selected the account from there you want to publish, Tweetdeck keeps active the account once selected, all the time.

Hootsuite shows the full list of scheduled messages separately for each account, white Tweetdeck shows every scheduled posts on the same column.

While Hootsuite is like a “message browser”, Tweetdeck is a column reader, so Hootsuite obbligates you to create and admin columns and the tab limit are 10 columns.
Tweetdeck doesn´t create tabs and let you create as many columns as you want.

So let me explain the differences to Google:

The paid search and the organic results are not clearly divided. You will only notice the difference by the small gray underlined term next to the displayed URL. 推广链接 means it is paid search, 百度快照 means organic search result.

All paid search results will be placed before the organic search results. That means, if 20 customers buy the same keyword, the first organic search result will be found on page three. The price is based on a bidding process. Not only the CPC but quality factors like landing page evaluation will influence the position as well.

The ads in the right column are no CPC-based ads. They are fix-priced for one whole year. According to empirical analysis, position NO. 1 to NO.3 have the same price and rotate among each other. Position no. 4 to no.10 are cheaper than no.1 to no.3 and rotate as well. If the position is already booked, you have to reserve and wait respectively until it will become free. There is no possibility to get out of the contract before this one year ends.

Once a while you might notice one or two ads with a blue banner on position one and/or two. It looks similar to Google’s blue banner, but in fact it has a totally different meaning: if you search for a keyword and there are no paid results for that keyword because no advertiser has booked it, Baidu will display ads that are similar to the keyword you entered. Example: you enter ‘keyword advertising’ but there are no paid results, so baidu will show two ads for the keyword ‘advertising’ with a blue background.
