Trackback and pingback, or references, are systems to link articles on other sites, blogs generally. The motivation is, for example, if I write an article and I find that there is another blog that discusses the same issue, I put a link on this blog for anyone interested in this topic also can see what I’ve written about it. Likewise, it is expected that the other blogger, to see your reference, he makes another on your blog.
This is very beneficial for readers, who can jump from one article to another on the subject that interests them without having to go to a search engine, because the links are very accessible, just below the item you are reading (generally).
The difference between the two systems
Trackbacks originally arose as a way to deepen into a topic that you are reading. When someone writes a note, it generates a trackback URL for other sites can use it. When other sites deepen into the topic and use the trackback, the original site shows a link in the comments (or a specific area for it) to news of the replicant. Similarly, there may be replicating more levels.
The pingback is an automatic process in which to publish an entry, all the sites that you link in the annotation will receive a ping (automatic notification) to know they have been linked. Thus, the replicants also leave a link in the original site very similar to that leave trackbacks.
Pros and cons
We note that trackback is unidirectional model (readers of the replicants don’t know necessarily a way to get to the original site or higher) and it results abusive, it was even used as a means to spam. It is more sensitive to this issue and ruthless bloggers can make a bad use of it. But although the writer has control to send references to other articles he could not include your address in his original article , for example he read it later, or because it is the same issue but with a different point of view, there is no need to link all the related items in the post if you have trackback.
However pingback, you can get really interested reader can reach all sites that have deppened it in both directions. I can start on the original note and read the rest of the sites or I can start replicating and get to the original note. Besides, the pingback is not as susceptible to fraudulent use, especially by bloggers, because systems always discover spam, also is automatic, you don’t need to worry about doing anything. However, include in your article addresses to which you refer, and then you also have a link on that article. The links are always returned.
What do you make?
It depends on you and the way you want to manage your posts and your blog in general. From my point of view, pinback is a way to feedback our blogs and make a blogger comunity where all people can share their opinion or point of view in a trusty way. I make pingback, and you?
