Trackback and pingback, or references, are generally systems to link articles on other websites, blogs. For example, if I write an article and I find that there is another blog that talks about the same issue, I put a link on this blog, so anyone interested in this topic could also read what I wrote. It is expected that the other blogger see your reference, he makes another on your blog.
This is great for readers, because they can jump from one article to another and read articles on a topic that interests them without having to use a search engine, because the links are very accessible. They’re just below the item they are reading.
The difference between the two systems
Trackbacks originally arose as a way to deepen into a topic that you are reading. When someone writes a note, it generates a trackback URL for other websites to be able to use it. When other sites deepen into the topic and use the trackback, the original website shows a link in the comments to news of the replicant. Similarly, there may be more levels of replicating.
The pingback is an automatic process to publish an entry, all the websites that you link in the annotation will receive a ping (automatic notification) to know they have been linked. Thus, the replicants also leave a link on the original website. It’s very similar to that leave trackbacks.
Pros and cons
We realize that trackback is unidirectional model (readers of the replicants don’t necessarily know a way to get to the original website or higher) and it results abusive, it was even used as a means to spam. Ruthless bloggers can misuse it. But although the writer has control to send references to other articles he can not include your address in his original article, for example, he reads it later, or because it is the same issue but with a different point of view, there is no need to link all the related items in the post if you have trackback.
However with pingback, you can get really interested readers to reach all websites that have deepened it in both directions. I can start on the original note and read the rest of the websites or I can start replicating and get to the original note. Besides, the pingback is not as susceptible to fraudulent use, because systems always discover spam. Also it’s automatic, you don’t need to worry about doing anything. However, include addresses you refer to, and then you also have a link on that article. The links are always returned.
What do you make?
It depends on you and the way you want to manage your posts and your blog in general. From my point of view, pinback is a way to feed our blogs and make a blogger community where all people can share their opinion or point of view in a trusty way. I make pingback, and you?
