Touchscreens are a type of screen that enables the user to interact with the mobile device directly by touching the screen. There are several different kinds of touchscreens, depending on the different methods of sensing touch that they have, but these three are the main types applied to mobile devices.

capacitive touchscreens

Mobile touchscreen types

  • Resistive: These are the most widely used type of screens in mobile phones. They are resistant to water and dust, and you can touch them with a finger, a stylus, etc. However, they are not resistant to scratches, and what’s more, they become less efficient when they get one. They have a lifespan of about 35 milion touches.
  • Capacitive: More expensive than resistive screens, these are resistant to water, dust and scratches, and have a longer lifespan. However, you can only activate them with your fingers.
  • Infrared: The most expensive of these three types, these are however the most resistant kind. The only disadvantage is that they are activated with warmth; so if your fingers are frozen in the winter, there is a good chance you may not be able to activate your phone.

Best touchscreen mobile phones

These are the best touchscreen phones in the market at the moment, as listed by Techradar. All of them have capacitive screens:

  • samsung-galaxy-s2Samsung Galaxy S2: Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • iphone4sApple iPhone 4S: LED-backlit IPS TFT, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • Sony-Ericsson-XPERIA-ArcSony Ericsson Xperia Arc: LED-backlit LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • samsung-galaxy-nexusSamsung Galaxy Nexus: Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • Motorola-RAZRMotorola Razr: Super AMOLED Advanced capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • samsung-galaxy-sSamsung Galaxy S: Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • blackberry-bold-9900BlackBerry Bold 9900: TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • htc sensation xeHTC Sensation XE: S-LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • lg_optimus_3dLG Optimus 3D: 3D LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • lg-optimus-blackLG Optimus Black: IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours
  • Touch screen types and lifespan

The average lifespan of resistive touchscreens is of 35 milion clicks, and that of captitive touchscreens, of 225 milion clicks, whereas infrared touchscreens have an average lifespan of 7 years. Also, external factors like the light of sun or dirt may affect the good function of your touchscreen. In order to prevent this you can use a screen protector, which will keep your screen cleaner for longer, but it is always a good idea to clean it with a microfiber cloth from time to time. As for the battery, it depends on the mobile, but it is preferrable to adjust the screen light at 50%. This way, battery will last longer and so will your touchscreen.

Very interesting article, it helped me understand the differences between the types of touchscreens, but do all mobile phones now have capacitive screens?

      • Helena 11/06/2012 at 01:55:04 Responder

No, Robert, not all of them, but capacitive screens are the most popular ones, and all the devices in this list have it.

hey can you kindly tell me the difference between AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 256K colors and TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors and which one is better????

      • Helena 27/08/2012 at 02:03:32 Responder

        Hello Akesh,

The main difference is that AMOLED touchscreens use LED technology, whereas TFT touchscreens use LCD. AMOLED screens are brighter than TFT screens, and they don’t require a back light. Because of this, battery lasts longer. The only downside is that their visibility is reduced when viewed in direct sunlight, and they have a shorter lifespan than TFT. About the colours, there is no substantial difference between 256K and 16M in mobile screens, although a 16M picture will appear smoother than a 256K one.

Hi Hellena. My samsung galaxy young phone screen went off completely shortly after charging the phone but it seems sensitive touches. sound is present, I can only view the contents on the screen at a certain angle but in a very bright light. Please advice no what could be the problem

      • Irene N. 27/09/2012 at 02:31:53 Responder

Hi Francis, I’m afraid you’ve have to contact a Samsung technician for this matter.

    5. nobody 30/09/2012 at 07:36:20 Responder

I seriously doubt that infrared touchscreen technology directly uses the ~12 micron wavelength thermal em radiation which a warm fingertip would emit and therefore cold fingers would be unable to be detected.
Most probably infrared leds (~0.85 micron wavelength) in combination with corresponding photodiodes will be employed to detect this reflected or interrupted light of a nearby (or touching) object of any temperature.

Which one is better SUPER AMOLED or TFT capacitive touch screen???
      Plz respond
      Kind regards

      • Irene N. 08/10/2012 at 00:23:20 Responder

        Hi Nilesh.

As my coworker Helen said before, AMOLED are brighter than TFT screens, and they don’t require a back light. Their battery lasts longer, but their visibility is reduced when viewed in direct sunlight, and they have a shorter lifespan than TFT.

You could say that AMOLED is the superior technology in this case, but it always depends on what you are looking for on a screen.

      Which screen is better one.
      1. iBall Andi 4.3A’s IPS Capacitive touchscreen or 2. Samsung Galaxy y Duos TFT Capacitive touchscreen.
      with best Regards

      • Helena 17/10/2012 at 01:31:14 Responder

        Hello Kamal,

IPS-LCD touchscreens offer better viewing and more accurate colours than TFT’s. While IPS use 2 transistors for pixel, TFT use just one. This means that the backlight they use is more powerful, but also that they consume more power.

      Hey Helena,
First I would like to congratulate you for being a maven inthis advanced technology.
For some reson, I still find non touch screen phones better than the touch screens. In fact the older ones with gr8 battery life and they were tough and durable too, though with less features. Please suggest me some excellent models in non touch screen type.

      • Helena 08/11/2012 at 04:30:17 Responder

        Hi Majeed,

Thank you for your comment. I’m afraid technology has some drawbacks, and the battery issue is one of them. Smartphones have more functionalities than traditional phones, so it’s not only due to the touchscreen that today phones’ batteries last less. If you don’t like touchscreens, I recommend that you buy a smartphone with phyisical keyboard. There are many models, and are available by manufacturers like BlackBerry or HTC, to mention some. But you need to look at other funcionalities of the phone, so it’s ultimately up to you to decide which one to buy.

      Hi there, Helena.

Xperia Z will be out soon and the only thing I’m hesitating about is their TFT LCD screen and thinking the full HD display will probably look better on a Super Amoled screen. That being said, a Samsung Galaxy 4 will surely have it but there will be a long time before releasing it.

So, getting back to the question, do you think, from your experience and proffesional judgment, that the difference between a full HD TFCT LCD screen and a full HD Super AMOLED will be considerably higher in terms of colours, brightness, sharpness etc?

      Thank you

      • Helena 15/01/2013 at 02:41:06 Responder

        Hi Blaire,

Yes, I think the difference will be very obvious. I would go for the Super AMOLED no doubt.

If a phone ,with infrared touch, is taken to a region having very high temperature ,what is actually going to happen?

      • Helena 11/03/2013 at 04:56:42 Responder

Infrared touchscreen phones are sensitive to warmth, which means unless your fingers are warm, you won’t be able to activate them. Your fingers will surely be warm in a region with high temperatures, so unless these are high enough to harm the device, you should have no problem at all using it.

Hi Saurabh, I’d say IPS LCD capacitive touchscreens are better than the rest, but you must also take into account that they’re more expensive. You should consider other features of the phone before deciding.

      What is qHD?

      • Helena 26/08/2014 at 00:01:03 Responder

        Hi Zain,

Quad HD or QHD means that the screen has double the amount of pixels as HD 720p, which means a better resolution.
